Intelligibility improvement of noisy speech for people with cochlear implants
With a cochlear implant, deaf people are able to understand speech under good listening conditions . Problems occur in adverse conditions, e .g . in reverberant and/or noisy environments . Experiments were carried out to improve the intelligibility of noisy speech using two different single-channel noise suppression techniques . This was realized by preprocessing, i .e . by applying the resynthesized speech signal to the cochlear implant system. Intelligibility tests were carried out in cooperation with the medical department.

Speech Intelligibility of Cochlear-Implanted and Normal-Hearing Children
Introduction: Speech intelligibility, the ability to be understood verbally by listeners, is the gold standard for assessing the effectiveness of cochlear implantation. Thus, the goal of this study was to compare the speech intelligibility between normal-hearing and cochlear-implanted children using the Persian intelligibility test. Materials and Methods: Twenty-six cochlear-implanted childre...
Relationship between Working Memory, Auditory Perception and Speech Intelligibility in Cochlear Implanted Children of Elementary School
Objectives: This study examined the relationship between working and short-term memory performance, and their effects on cochlear implant outcomes (speech perception and speech production) in cochlear implanted children aged 7-13 years. The study also compared the memory performance of cochlear implanted children with their normal hearing peers. Methods: Thirty-one cochlear impl...
The Effects of Auditory Contrast Tuning upon Speech Intelligibility
We have previously identified neurons tuned to spectral contrast of wideband sounds in auditory cortex of awake marmoset monkeys. Because additive noise alters the spectral contrast of speech, contrast-tuned neurons, if present in human auditory cortex, may aid in extracting speech from noise. Given that this cortical function may be underdeveloped in individuals with sensorineural hearing loss...
Title Effects of excitation spread on the intelligibility of mandarin speech in cochlear implant simulations
Noisy listening conditions remain challenging for most cochlear implant patients. The present study simulated the effects of decay rates of excitation spread in cochlear implants on the intelligibility of Mandarin speech in noise. Mandarin sentence and tone stimuli were processed by noise-vocoder, and presented to normal-hearing listeners for identification. The decay rates of excitation spread...
Evaluation of adaptive dynamic range optimization in adverse listening conditions for cochlear implants.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Adaptive Dynamic Range Optimization (ADRO) on speech identification for cochlear implant (CI) users in adverse listening conditions. In this study, anechoic quiet, noisy, reverberant, noisy reverberant, and reverberant noisy conditions are evaluated. Two scenarios are considered when modeling the combined effects of reverberation and noise: ...
